Whether we are starting something new or it is simply that competitive edge we were born with, setting goals always seems to be a common factor in evaluating our success. Therefore, the goals we set become very important and one must set them realistically in order to achieve!
As a trainer, goal setting was one of the first forms of art that I had to master. This plays a major role when determining a client's individual exercise program, setting both the client and trainer up for high achievement when done correctly. The term SMART Goals is an acronym used by many professionals and continues to show me results during my daily practices as a personal trainer.
Let's define what it means to set a SMART Goal. As stated in the picture this goal must be:
Specific - Does your goal clearly and specifically state what you are trying to achieve?
Measurable - How will you (and others) know if progress is being made on achieving your goal?
Can you quantify or put numbers to your outcome?
Attainable - Is achieving your goal dependent on anyone else?
Is it possible to re-frame your goal so it only depends on you and not others?
What factors may prevent you from accomplishing your goal?
Relevant - Why is achieving this goal important to you?
What values in your life does this goal reflect?
What effect will achieving your goal have on your life or on others?
Timely - When will you reach your goal?
Bad example of a SMART goal:
“I want to lose weight”.
Good example of a SMART goal:
“I want to lose 20 lbs by April 15th 2008. I will perform a half hour of cardio and half hour of strength training per day, 5 times a week and I will only eat out once every two weeks.”
This form of goal setting can be used for so much more beyond exercise and losing weight. In fact, I encourage all of you to practice this form of goals setting at work or in your personal lives, then track how many goals you attained. This is something I display on my bathroom mirror, where I am reminded daily! Best of Luck goal setting and as always, feel free to contact me!
